This washed Robusta comes from Idinjamala in Kerala, southern India – a region known for its long coffee tradition and high-altitude cultivation in shaded ecosystems. The coffee is classified as Royale A (screen 17) and is harvested between December and March at an altitude of around 1,200 meters, where the cooler temperatures allow for a slower ripening process and a more nuanced raw material than robusta from lower altitudes.
Although this lot does not reach the same high level as our finest (and organic) robusta from the region, it offers very competitive cup qualities. The aromas gravitate towards tobacco, herbs and allspice – distinct but never overpowering – and the texture is unexpectedly round and soft. It’s a well-balanced robusta with a clean profile, considerably more refined than is often associated with the species.
The high density and stable grading make this green coffee easy to work with regardless of roasting equipment. It’s great as a base for espresso blends where you want added body and crema, but it also performs cleanly – especially for those who want to explore the potential of robustness in a more elegant form.
This green coffee arrived at the roastery on November 5, 2025 and is from the 2024/2025 harvest.
