This is the holy land of coffee. The Dutch brought the coffee plant to Indonesia in 1699 and before long the country became the world’s largest coffee producer. In Sumatra – the world’s sixth largest island by surface area – the nutrient-rich volcanic soils give the beans their deep, earthy character with great spiciness.
Our coffee originates from the north of the island, near the highlands of Toba Island – the heart of what the world knows as Mandheling coffee. The name comes from the Mandailing people, a group of people in North Sumatra who have become synonymous with the coffee from their region. The traditional Giling Basah processing method – a unique cross between the dry and wet method – produces a flavor profile with lower acidity and a fullness that lingers on the palate.
In the cup, we encounter aromas of dark chocolate, cocoa, tropical trees and nuances of pipe tobacco. Then, mulled forest notes and muscovado sugar take over in a sweet, full-bodied and musky finish. This coffee is suitable with or without milk and can be brewed with virtually any method – drip coffee, filter brewer, espresso, fully automatic coffee machine or in presso.
Always freshly roasted – for this variety there is a maximum of 2 weeks from roasting until we ship to you. Peanut butter please!
