The Benti Nenqa washing station is named after the village (kebele) where it is located in the Guji region. This is where small farmers bring their ‘garden coffee’, the result of the year’s hard work in their gardens, where the coffee berries and bushes have been carefully tended. Coffee in Ethiopia is often grown right next to homes and often we are not even talking about a single hectare of cultivation per family. So on a very limited scale. The more families care for their coffee bushes, the better the quality – and the more they get paid. The more they are paid, the more they care for their coffee bushes. It’s like a virtuous circle for Mother Nature and us coffee roasters.
This is a particularly fine specialty coffee. One of the best Ethiopian we ever roasted. It really expresses the specific terroir of the area, with white flowers, butterscotch, sugar cane in a lemonade-like cup. Roast it in the light. Most people roast it mainly for filter brewing, but don’t be afraid to brew it as espresso as well. With milk in a cappuccino, this Guji Hambela Benti Nenqa is delicious.

Because just as coffee should always be freshly roasted when you drink it, the freshness of the green coffee also has a huge impact on the end result.
