There are few places in the world with more ideal conditions for growing coffee than Virunga National Park in eastern Congo. Plenty of both rain and sun and the volcanic soil of the Rwenzori Mountains mean that the coffee bushes thrive incredibly well at the high altitudes. The 7000 small coffee farmers in the park have just recently started to organize themselves into various cooperatives and today the area is making great strides on the specialty coffee scene.
This is a coffee where women do most of the work. They grow, harvest and process one of the world’s finest coffees out of love as well as necessity. When we roast this to filter brew, we are greeted by a well-balanced and sweet cup, where the chocolate and blackcurrants are most prominent. In the coffee, vanilla and black tea blossom among the notes of citrus and honey. It is a rich coffee, but where the flavors and aromas form a nice unity.
This green coffee arrived at the roastery on March 21, 2024 and is from the 2023 harvest
