On the slopes of the Jumay volcano in Jalapa, eastern Guatemala, grows a coffee from one of the country’s youngest and most exciting coffee regions: Nueva Oriente. It is Guatemala’s fourth coffee-growing region and one of the most recently established—and unlike the country’s old, grand coffee estates, it is dominated by smallholder farmers who grow their coffee in a mosaic with other crops. Here, volcanic soil, high altitudes, and a rainy climate come together in a combination that’s perfect for truly great coffee. At altitudes of 1,500–1,700 meters, the fertile soil yields dense, flavorful beans with both purity and finesse—and since the region is still young, there’s a passion for quality and a desire to prove themselves that often comes through in the cup.

This lot consists of the Arabica varieties Bourbon, Pache, Catuai, and Caturra, which, after selective harvesting, are thoroughly washed and sun-dried—a meticulous process that brings out the coffee’s purity. What makes this green coffee particularly rewarding for the home roaster is its versatility: it reveals two distinctly different profiles depending on how you roast it. When medium-roasted, especially for filter brewing, it becomes delicate and creamy—ripe stone fruit meets a generous sweetness of brown sugar, with a lively vibrancy that keeps the cup fresh from start to finish. If you roast it darker for espresso, however, the coffee’s deepest characteristics come to the fore with full force: dark chocolate first, closely followed by caramel and brown sugar that provide structure, and a generous nuttiness in the full-bodied profile. Both roasts work equally well—this is simply a coffee that’s meant to be brewed in a variety of ways.

Common to both profiles is a smooth, velvety body and a long, satisfying finish. With a lighter roast, you get the liveliness of the fruit and a brighter sweetness; a darker roast offers a round, nutty richness with a hint of dried plum that adds depth. As an espresso, it also reveals something truly special with a splash of milk, in a cortado or cappuccino. A well-balanced and easy-to-drink green coffee to come back to, cup after cup—and a great choice for home roasters who enjoy exploring just how much the roast level actually influences the flavor profile.

This green coffee arrived at the roastery on May 11, 2026, and is from the 2025/2026 harvest.
