The Waghi Valley is nestled between steep ridges in the Western Highlands, with the Kuli Mountains rising in the background and the Highlands Highway &#8211; one of the country&#8217;s few navigable routes &#8211; winding through the valley as the area&#8217;s lifeblood. Long isolated from the outside world, the region was only reached by Western explorers in the 1930s; yet the coffee heritage itself dates back to the early 1900s, when Typica seeds originating from the Jamaican Blue Mountain were planted in the fertile volcanic soil. Today, the land has largely been reclaimed by local families, who cultivate in the so-called <em>garden coffee style<\/em>: small plots of often just a few hundred trees per household, spread across hillsides that are rarely accessible by anything but foot. The berries are literally carried down from the mountains before being delivered to the communal washing stations &#8211; a logistical reality that has paradoxically preserved both the quality and the low-key pace of cultivation that has made the Waghi Valley one of the Pacific region&#8217;s most respected coffee regions.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">This micro-lot comes from small farmers who collected the berries from their neighbors and did the post-processing themselves. The coffee consists of the three classic varieties Typica, Arusha and Bourbon &#8211; a genetic trio that still forms the backbone of the country&#8217;s specialty coffee production. After selective picking, the berries are pulped, fermented in water and slowly dried before the lot is regraded to Grade A, the highest quality class in PNG&#8217;s grading system. The washed process produces a cleanly separated green coffee with uniform density and good structure &#8211; characteristics that make the lot forgiving in the drum and well suited to <strong>light to medium filter roasting<\/strong>. When properly developed, the elegant, vinous aroma profile that has made Waghi Valley famous is highlighted, without the fruit losing its steadiness against the chocolate in the background.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">In the cup, you are greeted by a silky and vibrant coffee with notes of dark chocolate, juicy peach and forest berries, carried by a soft and round body. The finish has a subtle vinous undertone that adds depth without overpowering &#8211; a signature of washed highland coffee from this particular part of the Pacific region. A raw coffee for the home roaster who seeks balance between fruitiness, structure and character &#8211; and who appreciates when a brewing cup carries both a place and a story.  <\/p>\n<p
